  1. The first thing I would do is be a club with a telescope of the assets of the group.

The claim is that the first, what to do in order to overcome a 10-inch mirror is a polished mirror of 6 inches. The amount of time increases with the square of the surface, and you need to make their mistakes in a smaller project. The time that passes in 6 inches in the construction of a 10-inch insignificant. All of this is probably for more than 12 inches.

Do not expect money by saving it on your own. There are other prices, no doubt, but save a lot of money is not one of them.

There are many books on this subject. Your local library may need. Your local astronomy club may have a library that you have. Not mine.

One of my club built a 22 "Newtonian telescope. It began with the purchase of a mirror, a white mirror. In fact, it managed to save much money with the club talent and time. And an impressive tool. Since must implement to 3 persons is, I am convinced that I'm using it may Morand as an instrument of that club I would have. I saw a 27 "Armor made of a person in 25 minutes assembled. This is an interesting design. The point here is that no one, that on-site assembly occur by a consortium, if you use too. And to reach over 12 "Dobs are usually armor, so you can move. The club of 22" has a vessel large enough to accommodate fully assembled, which can be fitted with wheels, and exploited. But in the case of an extension, which is in the supporters of the club, and assembled on site. So far, of course, must be re-installed when you return to the ship. This applies not always occur immediately, and the scope can be used for a month because the people have the right to have done so.

  2. Fifty years ago it was quite common that people make their own telescopes. Today it has become very rare for commercial telescopes become relatively cheaper. One consequence is that it is difficult parts to find to build its own domain. Unless you are dealing with a strong motivation for learning, and follow the necessary parts, I would not recommend building your own region. As the parts are hard to find, are very expensive, and homemade telescope is much more than a telescope in the civilian cost. The work is very much cheaper in China, where nearly all telescopes made today.

  3. Let me begin with a limited extent, this way you can learn the ropes and not much money, if you will.

That is, here is a pdf file that can help: http://pages.sbcglobal.net/raycash/manua ...

    http://pages.sbcglobal.net/raycash/manua and a book ...

And many online resources: http://www.starastronomy.org/TelescopeMa ...

    Have fun and good luck!

  4. More than a foot, is very ambitious for the first time. Most cities have local astronomical societies would be a great help for you, you will find yours and put you in contact with a local group or guru, sell a kit and support in this process. Good luck!

  5. Yes, it is very difficult. large pieces of glass are quite expensive, especially with the mirror coating quality you need. it would be better to buy one, and yet in a mesh opening is expensive.
